Maurus Dumalaog

Allow Me to Introduce Myself...

Self Portrait

My name is Maurus Gallardo Dumalaog. I was born in the beautiful islands of the Philippines, but grew up in Los Angles, California. I am currently in pursuit of two majors: Asian American Studies and Liberal Studies with an emphasis is Ethnic Studies. I will be graduating with the class of 2011. This upcoming Fall, I will be starting my Master's and Credential education for the Teacher Education Program (TEP) at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Pursuing an Asian American Studies Degree has helped me to rediscover my own culture, learn my history, find my identity and cherish my self -worth. The Liberal Studies Degree has allowed me to incorporate multiple passions such as Ethnic Studies, Theater and English to create a curriculum I feel will benefit the students I plan to serve in the near future. Nowadays, performance is much more engaging way to learn and in some ways more relevant. With the tools that I take away from my Ethnic Studies, English, Theater, and Liberal Studies classes I will equip my students with the skills they need to be able to reclaim/ rediscover their identity through the art of Drama. In finding one's self, my students will be able to inspire and motivate others to do the same. Using performance pedagogy, my students will also show the world how theater can be used as a tool for liberation.

I chose this major because it truly is interdisciplinary, and a means for me to fuse all my passions together and not have to worry about just one. Being a Liberal Studies Major really makes me feel like a risk-taker and also proves that I like to think and act "outside of the box." Liberal Studies prepares the future educators of America, which I believe is the most self-less passion one could ever have. Also, being surrounded with those who share the same interest of "serving the people," truly is humbling.

What sets me apart from anyone else is that this degree or these passions is not at all about the money. This truly is about the love for the Ethnic Studies and the power that the education embodies that enables others to transform in ways they never imagined. This is about knowing and loving who we are. This is about reclaiming our education.
